Heraklion is the fifth largest city in Greece and the only one on Crete that works all year. It has a university, a port, an airport with flights every hour, and a business district that runs on agriculture, shipping and tourism money. It is also, unlike Chania, not pretty, which means nobody comes here to be seen. How the city divides
The centre around Lions Square and the Venetian walls is where the bars and the smaller hotels are. The coast east of the port, from Amoudara through to Hersonissos and Malia, is resort land: enormous hotels, tourists from everywhere, nobody looking. Business visitors tend to sit in between at the larger city hotels. Each of the three works, but for different reasons.
Hotels
In the centre, the GDM Megaron on the harbour and the Aquila Atlantis on Ygias are large, well-staffed and used to guests with company. The Galaxy on Dimokratias is the classic business hotel and equally relaxed. Out on the coast, any of the big resorts at Amoudara or Hersonissos is anonymous by design. Avoid the guesthouses in the Lakkos quarter for this purpose; they are lovely and far too small.
Arranging a companion
The Athens flight is the whole logistics. A companion flies in for two nights or more on a day rate; the office quotes her ticket alongside it, and the total is agreed before anything is booked. Heraklion airport is fifteen minutes from the centre, so an evening arrival and a dinner the same night is routine. Going out
Heraklion eats late and well. Peskesi for modern Cretan cooking in an old mansion, Ippokambos on the harbour for fish and raki, or the tavernas along Korai street for the local version of a night out. Bars run from Korai and the Lions down to the harbour; they are full of students, loud and completely uninterested in couples. Hersonissos, twenty minutes east, has the clubs if you want them, and most people do not.
