The medieval town is a UNESCO site full of visitors until midnight, the coast from Ixia to Faliraki is an unbroken line of hotels, and the airport lands a flight from northern Europe every few minutes in August. The big resort hotels along Ixia and Ialyssos, and the Rodos Palace and Rodos Park in town, are anonymous by scale and perfectly relaxed. Faliraki is younger and louder and equally indifferent. The boutique hotels inside the medieval walls are wonderful and small; stay there as a couple, not as a room expecting a visitor at eleven. Lindos is the same story in a prettier setting.

Evenings on Rhodes
Eat in the old town but away from the main squares: Marco Polo Café in a courtyard, or the tavernas around the Jewish quarter. In the new town, Mandraki harbour for fish. The bar street inside the walls is loud and touristic; the serious drinking is in the new town around Orfanidou street, and in Faliraki’s clubs if you want that. Rhodes has a casino in the old Grande Albergo delle Rose, which is the one genuinely glamorous evening on the island.
