Volos is a working port that happens to have the best small-plates culture in Greece. The tsipouradika along Argonafton fill from one in the afternoon and again at nine, everyone knows everyone, and the city is small enough that a taxi from the railway station to the Anavros beach hotels takes eight minutes. People searching for escorts in Volos are usually here for one of three reasons: a business trip to the industrial zone, a stopover on the way up to Pelion, or a ferry to Skiathos in the morning.

Why Volos is not a nightlife city
Do not expect Thessaloniki. Volos closes earlier and drinks longer, and the whole evening is built around a table rather than a bar. That is good news for a discreet booking. Two people at a tsipouradiko on the waterfront draw no attention at all, and the town is used to couples passing through on their way to the mountain villages. What it does not have is any real local supply. The classified listings you find for the city are almost entirely operators travelling from Larissa or Athens on request, quoting a price and then adding the drive.
Hotels that make it easy
The Domotel Xenia on the Anavros waterfront is the obvious one: separate entrance from the beach side, a restaurant, and staff who have hosted every kind of guest for decades. The Volos Palace on Xenophontos and the Aegli on the port are also straightforward. The small guesthouses in the Palaia district are charming and exactly wrong for this, because the owner lives downstairs.
If you are heading up to Pelion, the hotels in Portaria and Makrinitsa are a different matter. They are tiny, family-run and observant. Book a companion who arrives with you as a couple, not one who turns up at the door at midnight.
Bringing a companion from Athens
The train from Larissa station to Volos runs several times a day and takes about four hours with one change; driving is a little faster. Most of our Volos bookings are two nights: the client comes up for work, the companion joins him for the evenings and the weekend on Pelion. An evening in Volos, done properly
Start at a tsipouradiko early, six or seven, while the fish is still coming off the boats: Kavouras, Ayios Nikolaos or any of the row on Argonafton where you can see the water. Order tsipouro by the small bottle and let the plates come. Afterwards the waterfront walk to the Anavros park is where the city strolls, and the bars near the university on Ermou stay open latest. In summer, the beach bars towards Agria are the late option.
Nobody in Volos will look twice at a well-dressed couple. What they will notice is a woman waiting alone in a hotel lobby at eleven. Arrange the arrival accordingly.
