The stretch of hotels along Syngrou Avenue is the workhorse of Athens business travel and it is 10 to 15 minutes from the centre off-peak. It is also the most straightforward place in the city to receive a visit, because these are large properties where guests come and go all evening and nobody is tracking the lobby. A summer week on the coast instead of the island
A fair number of travellers work out that the Athens Riviera does much of what they went to the Cyclades for, at a fraction of the logistics. Glyfada, Voula and Vouliagmeni sit 25 to 40 minutes from the centre and dominate the calendar from June to September, when the whole social life of the city moves south to the seafront. Expect the coast to be the busiest part of Attica in high summer and expect availability there to tighten accordingly, particularly in August, when island demand pulls the entire market thin. The northern suburbs
Kifisia, Marousi and Chalandri are 20 to 30 minutes north and run on an earlier clock than either the centre or the coast. Dinner starts sooner, the evening winds down sooner, and a booking that would be considered early anywhere else is normal there. If you are staying north for business rather than for a holiday, this usually works in your favour.
The Athenian clock
Athens runs late by European standards. On a weeknight the natural window is roughly 10pm to 1am, and on Friday and Saturday everything shifts about two hours later. Winter concentrates the evening in the centre and the northern suburbs; summer moves it to the coast. Requests placed for 8pm on a Saturday are not impossible, but they cut across the grain of the city and are the hardest slots to fill at short notice.
